Are looks important in a relationship?

April 16, 2008 / by serious-mbavha

[This post was inspired by what my Filipino girlfriend said to me when we first hooked up – “I am not beautiful.” And since then I have been trying very hard to think about how much effect has appearance on a relationship!]

Whilst appearance plays a pivotal role in determining who we end up dating or settling down with, at the end of the day I feel it has very little bearing on the success of any relationship. Appearance is essentially fragile for good looks give only a transitory sense of power and significance that cannot withstand stresses, strains and challenges of lived experience. It is by far much more important to harmonize physical, psychological and emotional health and welfare by promoting those positive values that each person is endowed with. What do you think?

I think what you stated as important is essentialy an ideal world. I think that if every person in a relationship held these values as linchpins, there would be no failed relationships.

However, I have a habit of being realistic, so I would say looks are important in a relationship. Even if you are attracted to someone, it does not mean other people you know will also find them attractive. While you may see a person in a certain light for their personality (my policy), others may base their opinions solely on looks, and it is their criticisms both of you will have to endure. Which you should.

But I should add, it has been scientifally proven that women are attracted more towards men who bear a similar likeness to the woman's father, and vice versa.
